The Perfect Pickled Onion Recipe
Ingredients
1 large red onion
½ cup white vinegar
½ cup water
1 ½ tbsp granulated sugar
1 ½ tsp salt
large pinch of red pepper flakes
2-3 garlic cloves
Step 1
Slice onion as thin as possible (or use mandoline)
Step 2
Add the sliced red onion to a glass jar or glass container with a lid
Step 3
Push 2-3 whole cloves of fresh garlic down the sides of the jar
Step 4
In a small saucepan, combine white vinegar, sugar, salt, water, and a pinch of red pepper flakes and bring to simmer
Step 5
Once simmering, immediately remove from heat. Pour pickling liquid over onions in the jar – make sure they are completely submerged in the liquid. Let them sit at room temperature (uncovered) for 30 minutes, then cover and refrigerate
