Kitchen Sink Summer Salad

Everything-but-the-kitchen-sink salad formula.

A choose your own destiny (or let your fridge choose your destiny) recipe for those summer nights when you want something easy, fresh, & full of produce you already have.

  1. Greens

A good salad always starts with good greens. We used romaine and mixed greens, but this is totally up to you.

OTHER OPTIONS:

  • Arugula

  • Kale

  • Butter Lettuce

  • Frisee

2. Veg

Adding veggies is a must (& you probably have some in your fridge or pantry already). We love adding boiled new potatoes (it’s the swede in us) but you can really add any veg your heart desires.

Other options:

  • Asparagus

  • Green beans

  • Radishes

  • Cherry heirloom tomatoes

  • Cucumber

3. Herbs

Fresh herbs in a salad are a non-negotiable. Try it and you’ll understand why. As Hanna would call it: a “floating herb”. We usually always add Italian parsley & dill!

Other Options:

  • Green onion

  • Mint

  • Basil

  • Chives

  • Cilantro

4. Protein

A self-explanatory addition to any salad you’re trying to make a complete meal. In the summertime, we love adding grilled flank steak.

Other Options:

  • Chicken thighs

  • Shrimp

  • Salmon

  • Roasted chickpeas

5. Extras

Every salad needs extras! You know, the fun stuff that makes your bowl of lettuce exciting. We add ingredients like creamy things, sweet things, pickled things, crunchy things—whatever excites you.

other options:

  • Goat cheese

  • Feta

  • Jammy eggs

  • Avocado

  • Pickled shallots

  • Pickled red onion

  • Olives

  • Pine nuts

  • Pistachios

  • Dried cranberries

  • Edamame

6. Dressing

& to pull it all together, the dressing (specifically vinaigrette). Our mom is a dressing magician and can whip up a dressing out of just about anything (we’re not kidding). But if you’re a dressing newbie, here is a simple ratio to help you start experimenting:

vinagrette ratio:

  • 3 parts oil

  • 1 part vinegar

happy hausting!
